Literacy

Children enjoy stories, and you won't know that your child enjoys stories unless you show them. Taking them to local libraries and reading to them are first ways for them to gain interest in reading. Reading is essential to living a life of control. Children must be able to read their surroundings. This all starts with you helping them read.

We need to help our children read

FROM REGIS COLLEGE • Literacy goes far beyond the ability to read a book or write a letter. Illiteracy can cause immeasurable damage to an individual’s emotional and intellectual development, and often limits a person’s ability to achieve a fulfilling and successful adult life.

Strong literacy aligns with the ways that individuals learn and socially interact. It forms the foundation for a lifetime of communication with family, peers, and employers. Ensuring strong reading and writing skills in the early stages of a child’s development is vitally important to preventing problems later in life, such as unemployment, societal disconnection, and even justice system involvement.
